01 / The Tsuge Primeval Forest of Mount Kosho (古処山)

Near the summit, a primeval forest of tsuge spreads over about 12 ha.Some old trees are more than 1,000 years old.

It grows near the summit of Mount Kosho (860 m), which straddles Kama and Asakura. Asama-tsuge, Ohime-tsuge and Maruba-tsuge are found, over an area of about 12 ha. As an example of a primeval forest that remains in good condition, it is a national Special Natural Monument.

02 / Okide Kofun (沖出古墳)

Three kinds of stone bracelets, kuwagata-ishi (鍬形石), sharin-seki (車輪石) and ishikushiro (石釧),came out of one tomb as a set.

A keyhole-shaped tomb of around the end of the 4th century in Urushio (漆生), about 68 m long and covered with fukiishi stones. The vertical stone chamber in the rear mound had been looted, yet three kinds of stone bracelets were excavated as a set; the city states there is no other example in a Kyushu tomb.

03 / Yamano no Gaku (山野の楽) and the Stone Statues

On the autumn equinox, Yamano no Gaku, a water-deity rite,is offered at Waka Hachiman Shrine.

The water-deity rite, also called the "Kappa Festival", was brought from Usa Hachimangu in the 2nd year of Kangen (1244), interrupted in 1880 (Meiji 13) and revived in 1890. On a hill behind the Gion shrine opposite, there are about 350 stone statues, locally called the "Five Hundred Arhats".

Kama was formed on March 27, 2006, by a new merger of the city of Yamada and the towns of Inatsuki, Usui and Kaho. The city buses changed routes and timetables on April 1, 2026; they include the Inatsuki-Keisen Line (Shimo-Kamoo Station to the Inatsuki area to Keisen Station) and a loop line starting from the comprehensive bus station.

  1. 01Sake Shrine (鮭神社, "Salmon Shrine") in Okuma, Kama, stands upstream on the Onga River and bears the name of salmon. A document of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism records that, from ancient times, salmon swimming upstream have been said to be messengers of the gods. Its founding is traditionally dated to the 3rd year of Jingo-keiun (769). At the Kenkei Festival (献鮭祭) held every December 13, a radish shaped like a salmon is offered in years when no salmon can be caught.
  2. 02The Tsuge Primeval Forest of Mount Kosho is a national Special Natural Monument, and Okide Kofun in Urushio is a prefecturally designated Historic Site. At Waka Hachiman Shrine in Yamano, Yamano no Gaku, a prefecturally designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property, is offered on the autumn equinox.
  3. 03The Kaho Alps (嘉穂アルプス), a chain of three mountains (馬見山, 屏山 and 古処山), was certified a Japan Mountain Heritage site in fiscal 2016. The Okuma Castle Site in Nakamasu is a prefecturally designated Historic Site, where a legend says Toyotomi Hideyoshi built castle walls in a single night. In March 2024 the city adopted its first insect-industry city concept, to foster industries that use insects.
