In a tunnel on the hill behind the hall, about 45,000 people trained in rescue.

The Chikuho Coal Mining Association's Nogata meeting hall (旧筑豊石炭鉱業組合直方会議所) is a wooden two-story Western-style building completed in 1910 (Meiji 43), where mine operators gathered to debate coal prices, coal transport and mine safety. The model mine tunnel on the hill behind it was installed in 1912 as the first in Japan, and the brick arch that survives was built in 1920. Both are national Historic Sites.

  • Model tunnel installed in 1912 (Meiji 45)
  • About 45,000 trained in rescue until 1968

A meteorite said to have fallen here in 861has eyewitness records.

Suga Shrine (須賀神社) in Shimosakai is said to have had a meteorite fall in its grounds in 861 (Jogan 3). Fukuoka Prefecture's official tourism site says eyewitness records survive and that it is known as the world's oldest meteorite. A replica stands in the grounds; the real stone is shown at the Shinko Taisai festival in October, once every five years (October 2016).

03 / Nagasaki Kaido Road (長崎街道)

With the domain gone and its retainers away, the townspeople moved the highway into town.

In 1720 (Kyoho 5) the Nogata domain was abolished and its retainers returned to the Fukuoka main domain. Out of concern that the town would decline, the townspeople's efforts had the Nagasaki Kaido, which ran along the east bank of the Onga River, moved into the town, and the town has lasted. The city's tourism portal records that a village headman petitioned the main domain.

  • Domain abolished in 1720 (Kyoho 5)
  • Road moved from east bank into town
  • Kokura to Nagasaki: about 223.8 km, 25 post towns
