01 / Joyama Yokoana Tombs (城山横穴群)

Traces of color at the entrancewere analyzed as red bengara.

A national Historic Site of hillside tombs in Kanada. The Agency for Cultural Affairs gives the start of construction as the first half of the 6th century, the earliest stage among tombs of this type in the Onga River basin. The town records that traces of color at the entrance were found by analysis to be bengara.

02 / Kawamura Koyo and the Concerto Garden (協奏の庭)

The kagura of the shrine next to his birthplaceis regarded as the origin of his music.

The children's-song composer Kawamura Koyo (河村光陽) was born in 1897 in a house next to Fukuchi Shimomiya Shrine (福智下宮神社). He composed over a thousand pieces. On the grounds of the Agano-no-Sato Fureai Koryu Kaikan (上野の里ふれあい交流会館) stand a monument erected in 1966 and the Concerto Garden (協奏の庭), made of Agano ware (上野焼).

03 / Toraozakura (虎尾桜)

An Edo-higan cherry at 400 m on the slopes of Mt. Fukuchi, with an estimated age of over 600 years and designated a town Natural Monument. It once reached full bloom every other year; the town records that it now flowers every year thanks to recent conservation. Edo-higan is the town tree.

The town was formed on March 6, 2006, by the merger of the former towns of Akaike, Kanada and Hojo. The Hikosan (彦山川) and Chugenji (中元寺川) rivers join in the middle of town. The town gives the walk from Kanada Station on the Heisei Chikuho Railway to the main office as about 5 minutes. A regional council for the railway has resolved on a broad direction of converting to buses, announced on March 25, 2026; the operator says the schedule is undecided and that trains will keep running as before for the time being.

  1. 01Ikata Kofun in Ikata, Fukuchi, is a prefecturally designated Historic Site, a round tumulus thought to date from the end of the 6th century. Its two-chambered horizontal stone chamber is over 12 m long, and the gaps between the stones are sealed with clay. The prefecture's tourism site says it is open only twice a year, in April and October.
  2. 02The Joyama Yokoana Tombs in Kanada are a national Historic Site, where 222 tombs were confirmed in surveys from FY2008 to FY2013. The color at the entrance has been analyzed as bengara. Kawamura Koyo of Agano (上野) was a children's-song composer of over a thousand pieces, born in a house next to Fukuchi Shimomiya Shrine (福智下宮神社).
  3. 03At Iwaya (岩屋) in Benjo (弁城) there is a prefecturally designated Historic Site, a carved Sanskrit-letter mandala said to have been completed in 1335. The Kojo wisteria (迎接の藤) at Jozenji (定禅寺) is a prefecturally designated Natural Monument said to be over 500 years old, and wisteria is the town flower. In the May holidays the Ikata Yamagasa competition (伊方山笠競演会) is usually held, and Agano ware (上野焼) is said to have begun when a kiln was built in 1602.
