01 / Sendō Kofun (仙道古墳)

A national Historic Site in Hisamitsu. A 6th-century round tomb about 33 m in diameter. A shield-bearing warrior haniwa (tatemochi-bujin haniwa, 盾持武人埴輪) was unearthed; the town describes it as rare in Kyushu. Red and green circles and triangles are painted on the chamber walls. A full-size model of the chamber can be viewed anytime.

02 / Oiwake-ishi (追分石) Signpost

A signpost from the early Edo period,inscribed “Right: Higo, Satsuma road.”

A town-designated Tangible Folk Cultural Property in Ishibitsu (石櫃). It is inscribed “Right: Higo, Satsuma road” (the Tenka road) and “Left: Bungo, Akizuki, Hita, Amagi road.” At the time Ishibitsu thrived as the lower post town of Yamae-shuku (山家宿), and the marker is said to have been set up with Takesaku, a shipping agent of Yamae-shuku, as organizer.

03 / Okunchi (おくんち) at Ōnamuchi Shrine

Modeled on an Akizuki domain daimyo procession,the Okudari is the highlight of the autumn festival.

The autumn grand festival, Okunchi, is held every year on October 23. It has gone on for 700 to 800 years and is said to have taken its present form in the Edo period. The highlight is the Okudari (おくだり); a feather-spear procession of local young men and an Urayasu dance (浦安の舞) by junior high school students add to it.

Chikuzen lies in the northern Chikushi Plain and was born on March 22, 2005, when the former towns of Yasu and Miwa merged. It is an agricultural area of rice, wheat and soybeans, and the town records that its closeness to the Fukuoka metropolitan area and the Kurume area has driven population growth. Specialties include black soybeans (Kurodamaru), strawberries and kizu citrus (木酢).

  1. 01Tokami's Kannonzuka Kofun is a round tomb from the late 6th to early 7th century and a town-designated Historic Site. It is about 30 m in diameter and about 3.5 m high. Its stone chamber has a three-part structure of front, middle and rear rooms, and red pigment depicts circles, stars and boat-like shapes on the south sleeve stone at the rear room's entrance and on its back wall. The manager is the Tokami Forestry Association, and the town's official cultural-property page gives no viewing information.
  2. 02Sendō Kofun in Hisamitsu is a national Historic Site, and the town says its decorated chamber is opened to the public in spring and autumn. From a jar coffin (Jar Coffin No. 10) at the Mine Site (峯遺跡) in Higashi-oda, glass bi discs and mirrors of China's Former Han period were found, and it is regarded as a royal tomb. At Matsuo Hachimangū (松峡八幡宮) there is a tradition that the name Yasu came from Empress Jingū saying “Kokoroyasushi” (I am at ease).
  3. 03Chikuzen was born on March 22, 2005, when the former towns of Yasu and Miwa merged. Ōnamuchi Shrine holds its Okunchi every October 23, and in spring the Ōfuji Festival is held in Kamitakaba, where the great wisteria, the town flower, grows.
