  1. 01The Hirakawa Residence (平川家住宅) in Tagomori, in the former Ukiha town (浮羽町), is a farmhouse in the kudo-zukuri (くど造り) style, with a U-shaped roof (凹字形). Its main house and barn were designated Important Cultural Properties in 1971. The thatched main house has three gables lined up across its front, it is still used as a residence, and the inside can be visited with advance reservation.
  2. 02The city has the nationally designated Yakata Kofun Group and the Chikugo-Yoshii district, a nationally selected Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The Kusumori Kawakita Residence (楠森河北家住宅) is a nationally registered tangible cultural property, and the city records its kabeyui (壁結), the repair of the bamboo fence around the estate, as a custom lasting over 300 years. The Tsuzura terraced rice fields are among the 100 Selected Terraced Rice Fields of Japan, with a spider lily (higanbana) viewing event every year, and the Oishi Weir (大石堰) was opened in the Edo period at the initiative of five village heads and still waters the paddies downstream.
  3. 03In the southeast of Fukuoka Prefecture, the city was formed in 2005 (Heisei 17) by the merger of the former Ukiha town (浮羽町) and the former Yoshii town (吉井町). In the orchard zone of the foothills grow persimmons, which the city calls a nationally leading product of the area.
