Kurume City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Nichirinji Tumulus (日輪寺古墳), in the grounds of Nichirinji (日輪寺) in Kyomachi (京町), keeps a mound that at first looks like a round tomb, but it is a keyhole-shaped tomb about 50 m long and a National Historic Site. The stone screen inside the burial chamber is incised with alternating key-pattern and concentric-circle designs, and traces of red colouring can still be seen. A prior contact is needed to visit.
  2. 02Kurume Kasuri (久留米絣) is a National Important Intangible Cultural Property, said to have been devised by Inoue Den (井上伝) at the end of the Edo period. The city's introduction page says Kurume developed into a rubber-industry town to be proud of worldwide, citing the rubber-soled tabi and tyre production. Oniyo (鬼夜) of Daizenji Tamataregu Shrine (大善寺玉垂宮) is a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, and Suitengu (水天宮) is introduced as the head shrine of Suitengu shrines across the country.
  3. 03The city says that Sakamoto Genzo (坂本元蔵), a master of horsemanship in the Edo period, created new varieties of the city flower, the Kurume azalea (久留米つつじ), using the moss-sowing method. The Yanagizaka Sone hazel-wax tree avenue (柳坂曽根の櫨並木) in Yamamoto-cho is a prefectural Natural Monument, with about 260 trees along about 1.2 km. The three kappa statues (河童像) in Tanushimaru are city-designated Tangible Folk Cultural Properties.
