01 / Kawaminami Wetland

The Agency for Cultural Affairs calls it“the only natural habitat in Japan” of Hyuga hoshikusa.

A small wetland in the middle of the Hyuga Plain, surrounded by open fields, it is a National Natural Monument. The Agency for Cultural Affairs says it holds almost every type of wetland plant found in warm regions and is a noted site for the carnivorous Nagaha-no-ishimochiso (ナガハノイシモチソウ). Hyuga hoshikusa (ヒュウガホシクサ) blooms from September to October.

02 / Mukaita Site

From the Late Paleolithic to the Early Jomon,traces of life are found almost without a break.

It spreads over the tip of a tongue-shaped plateau about 1km north of the town center. Traces of life are found almost without a break from the Late Paleolithic (about 40,000 years ago) to the Early Jomon (about 8,000 years ago), and the town says it is regarded as the oldest site in the prefecture.

A National Historic Site on the Kokumitsubaru plateau, built from the 4th century to the end of the 6th. Mound No. 11 is 107m long, with a rear circle 58m across; the town says it may well be a kofun from the emergence period. Around 1929 the cluster suffered large-scale looting, without any detailed survey beforehand.

The town has JR Nippo Main Line's Kawaminami Station. The town's official guide gives about 5 minutes by car, or about 50 minutes on foot, from the station to the town center. It faces the Hyuga Sea on the east and borders Kijo, Takanabe and Tsuno towns on the west, south and north. The town measures about 12km east to west and about 10km north to south.

  1. 01Sorinbaru Kuyoto (宗麟原供養塔, a National Historic Site) is a tower that honors those killed in battle, friend and foe alike. Its inscription is read as “Honrai tozai nashi,” and it is affectionately called “Kankan Butsu” after the bell visitors strike.

  3. 03Settlers came from all over Japan after the war, and the town is called “Kawaminami Gasshukoku” (the United States of Kawaminami). “Torontoron,” a place name used by the shopping street, is the venue of the kei-truck market. Hirata Shrine is one of the six old shrines that take part in the Takanabe Kagura Rokusha Rengo Daishinji.
