01 / Mochida Kofun Cluster

Mound No. 15 is a keyhole-shaped tomb 46m long. Its boat-shaped stone coffin was dug up in the Edo period and set on the top of the rear mound. The largest, Mound No. 1 (Hakarizuka, 計塚), was once written "balance mound" (天秤塚) yet, it seems, read Hakarizuka. Many of the excavated items left the prefecture in the early Showa era.

02 / Kuromizu Family Residence

A chief retainer's house for a lineof strategists, with a thatched main house.

The Kuromizu family were military strategists for generations in Takanabe Domain. The house was the residence of Kuromizu Chozo, one of the 12 chief retainers of the 10th lord, and is called a chief retainer's residence. Its main house is hip-roofed and thatched, dated to about the Bunka-Bunsei era (1804-1830) though its construction date is unknown, and the entrance has a three-step shikidai (式台).

03 / Meirindo Domain School

The plaque of the domain school Meirindois in the hand of the 7th lord, Tanehige.

In 1778 the 7th lord, Akizuki Tanehige, opened the domain school Meirindo (明倫堂), open to all regardless of rank. Its plaque is in his own hand. Earlier, in 1761, a support system for farmers with many children began. Meirindo was abolished in 1873.

The town's official site calls Takanabe the smallest municipality in Miyazaki Prefecture and says daily life can be managed by bicycle. It was a castle town of the Akizuki clan's 30,000-koku domain, and the site says traces remain in place names and streets. The gateway is Takanabe Station on the JR Nippo Main Line.

  1. 01Takanabe Daishi is a group of statues standing at the tip of the Mochida plateau. Iwaoka Yasukichi, pained by the looting of tombs in the early Showa era, began carving at 40 to calm the spirits of those buried there; the town's official site says there are over 700.

It is a castle town where the 7th lord, Akizuki Tanehige, opened Meirindo; Takanabe Kagura is the collective name for kagura passed down at shrines in the former domain's territory, and Ishii Juji's birthplace is a prefectural historic site.
