01 / Binchotan charcoal-making in Kitago

Because ubamegashi oak is scarce, local arakashi oak is the raw wood.

This charcoal-making technique is designated a prefectural intangible folk cultural property. In small kilns introduced from Aichi Prefecture in the Showa 30s (1955-64), the kiln temperature is raised gradually to dry the wood, which is then carbonized and hardened over about a month. The town's site says that when the charcoal is drawn out, pieces striking each other ring with a metallic sound.

Past the Niomon gate of Zenchoji Temple (全長寺), the Jizo is enshrined at the summit of Mt. Tetsujo, at the top of 365 stone steps. It is also said to be a single-block, three-bows carving by the eminent priest Gyoki, and is called the "Hibuse Jizo" because it is said to have quelled a great fire in Edo some 200 years ago. The grand festival is centered on the 24th day of the lunar first month, over three days.

Misato Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Kudara-no-Yakata (百済の館) was built as a symbol of Japan-Korea exchange, modeled on the "guesthouse" of the former national museum standing on the royal palace site at Buyeo (扶餘), the last capital of Baekje. The town's site says the red, blue and green dancheong (丹青) filling its beams and eaves are the work of master craftsmen from Korea.
  2. 02Nango Mikado also has the Nishi-no-Shosoin (西の正倉院), recreated with reference to the Shosoin's original plans, which had been regarded as not to leave the premises. The main hall of Mikado Shrine (神門神社) is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, and the Shiwasu Festival (師走祭り) is a festival in which Baekje royalty, a father and son, are said to meet once a year.
  3. 03Misato was formed in 2006 from the former villages of Nango, Saigo and Kitago. Kitago's binchotan charcoal-making and the Onda Festival of Tashiro Shrine in Saigo are both prefecturally designated intangible folk cultural properties.
