Three main streets run south from the harbor of Mimitsu (美々津), crossed at right angles by firebreak lanes called tsukinuke (ツキヌケ), said to date from the Edo period. The shipping agent Kawachiya (河内屋), built in 1855, is now a history museum. The place name Tachinui (立縫) keeps a legend of Emperor Jimmu's departure.

Hososhima Tide Station (細島験潮場) was set up in 1892 (Meiji 25) as a tide-observation post by the Army's Land Survey Department. The building is brick, with a mortar finish on its outer walls today. A tide gauge sits over the well at the center of the observation room, and readings now go automatically to the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan. In the Edo period, the site held a lookout post that watched ships.

The eye doctor Tachibana Kimiyuki (橘公行) adapted Edo-style sato-kagura into this dance and spread it. In Nagata (永田), it is offered at the local Inari shrine on the first-horse day (hatsuuma). The Hyuga Hyottoko Summer Festival (日向ひょっとこ夏祭り), begun in 1984, also holds individual contests for fox, okame, and hyottoko dancers.

  • City-designated folk performing art (1992)
  • 3 musicians, about 10 youths, 1 broom dancer
  • Offered at the Inari shrine on the first-horse day
