The pond lies at about 230 m on the Nishiyama hills and covers roughly 70 ares. The city writes that its floating islands keep drifting together and apart on wind and current, and the prefecture writes that there are more than 20 islands of reeds, irises and other plants. It was designated a Niigata Prefecture Natural Environment Conservation Area in 1979 and a prefectural natural monument in 2004.

At the festival of Nikko Shrine, puppets of an old man and a shrine maiden dance on a festival float. The Mikojii of Yokomachi is said to have begun when a puppeteer who stayed in town left an old man's head behind and it was dressed and made to dance; the maiden was reportedly made later. A "Nankin Ayatsuri" in a travel diary of 1804 is presumed to be it.

03 / Amida Hall, Uonuma Shrine

In repairs, the words "Eiroku 6, Kinoto-Ushi"were found on a bracket of this thatched hall.

This single-storied, hip-roofed, thatched hall in the Uonuma Shrine precinct is a national Important Cultural Property. From characters found during a dismantling repair in 1954, the city estimates it was built in 1563, or in 1565 by the sexagenary cycle, and presumes the very short eaves were a response to heavy snow.

  • National Important Cultural Property (designated 1906)
  • Estimated built 1563 or 1565
  • Very short eaves

Living here

  • about 30,000 people

Ojiya has no Shinkansen station. The city's three stations are Ojiya on the Joetsu Line, and Uchigamaki and Echigo-Iwasawa on the Iiyama Line. The city's migration-support site says it takes about 2 hours from Tokyo, changing at Urasa, and about 50 minutes from Niigata, changing at Nagaoka. In the town center, a reservation-based AI service called Ikote runs. The gateway is Ojiya Station.

Ojiya City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Akashido is a hall for Hori Jiro Masatoshi, said to be the founder of Ojiya chijimi; merchants and craftspeople tied to chijimi pooled funds to build it in 1848, and the high-floored, all-zelkova hall, designed with snow in mind, is a city-designated cultural property
  2. 02In Ojiya, ukiyo-e prints, called "egami" in the local dialect and said to have been souvenirs from selling chijimi in Edo, are joined together to decorate walls at the Hina doll festival; the custom was designated a city cultural property in 2019
  3. 03The bull butting of the Nijumurago area, which spans Higashiyama in Ojiya, Yamakoshi in Nagaoka and Hirokami in Uonuma, is a nationally designated custom; a city-designated Nishikigoi Egata-cho, a picture record of the koi shown at an expo in 1914, also survives in Ojiya
