A thatched old house that keeps the layout of a head village official's residence in the Mimasaka region. The plan board survives, and a gatehouse and two storehouses come with it. It opens to the public from the 1st to the 7th of each month, with coffee and sweets (paid).

02 / Nishi Somon of Doi-juku

In the Keicho era Doi-juku became one of the seven post stations of Mimasaka, with barrier gates east and west. Taken down in 1869 when barriers were abolished, the west gate was rebuilt in March 2001. A koraimon-style gate, 6.5 m high and 7.88 m wide.

03 / Tonin-sai of Kajinami Shrine

A festival has been held where a living godsteps over worshippers' backs.

An unusual festival in which the Tonin-sama (living god) steps over the backs of worshippers lying prostrate on the approach. Being stepped over is said to bring good fortune. Held on the first Saturday of October, it is a tradition of four hundred and some decades, kept up by parishioners.

  1. 01The three-story pagoda of Chofukuji, built in 1285 (Koan 8) by the priest Engen, stands about 22 m tall and is a national Important Cultural Property. Said to be the oldest wooden pagoda in the prefecture, it stood on Mt. Maki and moved to its present site in 1951.
  2. 02In Miyamoto stand the site of the house where Miyamoto Musashi is said to have been born and raised (a prefectural historic site since 1959) and Sanomo Shrine; the Chizu Express has a Miyamoto-Musashi Station.
  3. 03Yunogo Onsen is known as one of the Mimasaka Three Springs. In Kijiyama, wood-turners have worked natural wood for about 450 years.
