01 / Imo-kurabe Festival

East and west districts comparetaro from root to leaf tip.

At this Omi-Nakayama festival, the Higashi-tani and Nishi-tani districts ritually compare the length of the tonoimo, a kind of taro, from root to leaf tip. Young men and boys carry taro decorated on bamboo poles to the Nogamiyama grounds and sit on either side of the Imo-ishi, the taro stone. It is said that if the west wins the harvest will be good, and if the east wins, poor.

Takashikozo from Bessho formed when iron dissolved in groundwater attached to plant roots and twigs and settled; the town calls it a mineral like a chikuwa, a fish-paste tube. It comes out of the Ancient Lake Biwa Formation, and the town's plan gives its dense occurrence as the reason for designation. It became a National Natural Monument in 1944.

The seeds of an ordinary kaya have straight grooves, but those of the Kumano kaya spiral to the left or the right. The Agency for Cultural Affairs' explanation at the time of designation also notes the seeds are long and large, says the trees were scattered near houses in Kumano, and suggests they were moved from mountains nearby. It became a National Natural Monument in 1922.
