In the Sengoku period, local lords and landed warriors of Koka banded together in a self-governing league called the Gunchuso, deciding matters by council. In one district of the former town of Konan, five small fortified residences stand within about 1 km of each other, and they were designated national historic sites in 2008. The city newsletter describes the earthwork at Shingu Branch Castle as nearly 10 m high.
