Yoshinobu's guardsbecame tea farmers.
In 1869, former retainers of the shogunate, relieved of their duty guarding Tokugawa Yoshinobu, began clearing the Makinohara Plateau (牧之原台地) under their leader Chūjō Kageaki (中條景昭), and picked their first tea four years later. Today most tea here is fukamushi-cha (深蒸し茶), steamed for longer than usual. At the 2025 national tea competition (全国茶品評会), the city won the production-area award (産地賞) in the fukamushi sencha category.
