01 / Tsunami defence

17,000 people in the flood zonecan escape in five minutes.

In 2011 the town drew up a hazard map assuming a once-in-1,000-years tsunami, and has since built its planning around tsunami defence. It has put up 15 tsunami evacuation towers so that about 17,000 people in the expected flood zone can take refuge within five minutes, and along the coast the 11.8 m Kawashiri Coast seawall (川尻海岸防潮堤) is now complete.

In the Taishō era, rice fields near the mouth of the Ōi River were ruined by floods and rice would not grow well. Eel farming was taken up to make use of the land, and the town has long been known as "the town of eels". Yoshida Fishing Port is one of the prefecture's leading shirasu (whitebait) ports, and fresh raw shirasu is a local speciality.

Nōmanjiyama Park (能満寺山公園) stands where the Takeda clan had a castle in the Sengoku period. In 1568 Takeda Shingen built a fort here as a first step to controlling Tōtōmi, and in 1571 it was fortified and named Koyama Castle (小山城). Remains such as the triple moat survive, and the castle-shaped Koyama Castle Observation Deck (展望台小山城) displays items linked to the Takeda.
