01 / Hakushu Cotton Swaddles (伯州綿)

A newborn gets a cotton swaddle.A person turning 100 gets a lap blanket.

Every year, Sakaiminato gives a swaddle made of Hakushu cotton to each baby born in the city, and a lap blanket to each person who turns 100. Hakushu cotton is a Japanese cotton first grown on the Yumihama Peninsula in the Edo period. Since fiscal 2008, the city has worked to bring back cotton fields that were nearly lost.

02 / Imo-daikan Monuments (芋代官碑)

Monuments to the magistrate who brought the sweet potato:7 of the 12 in Tottori stand in this city.

In 1732, during the Great Kyoho Famine, sweet potatoes were brought from Satsuma to the San'in region, and many villagers' lives were saved. These monuments thank Ido Heizaemon, the magistrate of the Iwami Silver Mine domain who did it. Sweet potatoes reached Sakaiminato in 1780, the first place in Tottori Prefecture. The city designated the monuments a folk cultural property in 1987.

03 / Okonya in Takenouchi-cho (竹内町のオコニャ)

Groups take turns making a great rice cakeand offering it at Daido-ji temple.

Okonai is a New Year event praying for safety, a good harvest and big catches; Takenouchi-cho calls it Okonya. Each early January, groups centered on 15 founding households have taken turns making a great rice cake, offering it at Daido-ji (大同寺) and handing it on to the next group. It is said to have begun around the Horeki era.

Sakaiminato sits at the western edge of Tottori Prefecture on the Yumihama Peninsula, facing the Shimane Peninsula across the Sakai Channel. Yumigahama beach was chosen for the '100 Best White Sand and Green Pine Coasts of Japan', and 177 yokai bronze statues line Mizuki Shigeru Road. In Sakai Daiba Park, built on an old Bakumatsu-era battery, about 240 cherry trees bloom.
