01 / Yodoe umbrellas (Yodoe-gasa)
Even after the last maker closed, the craft passed to a preservation society.
Yodoe umbrellas are said to date from 1821, when Kurayoshiya (倉吉屋周蔵) came from Kurayoshi and opened an umbrella shop. In the Taisho era, 71 makers turned out 170,000 a year, shipped across western Japan. The last maker closed in 1984, but the Yodoe Umbrella Preservation Society carried on the craft, and three artisans now make them.
