The Miyazaki-Sakai Coast (宮崎・境海岸) is a gravel beach about 4 km long, where raw jade stones wash up from the sea. In 1967, on the Hamayama (浜山) terrace overlooking the sea, the remains of a Kofun-period magatama workshop were found for the first time in Japan. The excavation team named the beach the Hisui Coast (ヒスイ海岸). The hard stones were split after grooves were cut around them.

02 / Beach ball

A farming town that bent over all dayinvented a sport for looking up.

When rice was still planted and harvested by hand, the town promoted volleyball to prevent stooped backs. In 1979 the town's sports instructors set the rules for beach ball, a game anyone could enjoy. It is played on a badminton court, over a 180 cm net just high enough to hide your face. In October 2026 the town hosts the 43rd national tournament.

When excavated in 1973 it was the largest pit dwelling in Japan, and it became a National Historic Site the next year. Pottery akin to Niigata's flame-style ware shows links to the north.
