01 / Ageno-sho Chinese pear (安下庄のシナナシ)

A pear like China's Tuligrows in a garden below Mt. Dake.

A variety resembling the Tuli pear, native to northern Shandong. The prefecture's record says it exists "nowhere else in Japan". The original tree died in 1971; the present young tree was planted in 1988 from grafted stock kept elsewhere.

In 1885, about 30% of the 944 members of the first official emigrant group to Hawaii were from 大島郡. In the official-emigrant era, 3,913 people went to Hawaii from Suo-Oshima. The town's Japan-Hawaii Immigrant Museum stands in the former home of Fukumoto (福本長右衛門), who returned from abroad.

03 / Shochi no Suido (庄地のスイドウ)

A waterway under the terracesruns on for 160 m.

A stone-walled waterway runs beneath rice terraces on a slope at roughly 100 to 50 m above sea level. Kuka has 40 such tunnels; the designated one has the oldest style of stonework and a large scale. The prefecture says it has "no known parallel anywhere in Japan".

The town spans Yashiro Island and other islands: five inhabited and 25 uninhabited. The Oshima Bridge links it to the mainland, and the annual mean temperature is a mild 15.5°C. The tourism association calls it the "mikan island", and the town runs a vacant-house bank. Materials of the folklorist Miyamoto Tsuneichi are kept at the town's Miyamoto Tsuneichi Memorial Museum.
