At the Toyokawa oil field, exploration began in 1882 and oil was struck in October 1913. At its peak it produced 86,800 kiloliters a year, and 718 wells were dug, making it one of the notable oil fields of Akita, a prefecture once called the kingdom of oil. It was recognized as a modern industrial heritage site in 2007, and the site of its cable-tool No. 1 well is a city historic site.

02 / Storehouse

One go of rice a day, set aside, became a store against crop failure.

Rikinosuke Ishikawa followed an old saying: one go of rice a day can save a person's life. Each day he set aside one go from his own food in a separate tub and stored it as steamed rice. After a thousand days at his mountain retreat it came to one koku, and he had his household do the same; what they stored is today's Ishikawa family famine-relief storehouse. The site is a prefectural historic site.
