01 / Falls and potholes
A river drops over a lava cliff, and eddies have formed holes in the rock.

About 100,000 years ago an eruption of Mount Chōkai sent out a great flow of lava. The Koyoshi River drops at once over its end cliff, a fall of about 57 m in three stages. Near the first and second falls the rock holds round or oval potholes, 30 cm to 2 m across, formed when flood water carrying sand and gravel swirled over the riverbed.
