Lanterns shaped like shogi piecesare set alight on a bridge over the Yoneshiro River.

A Tanabata event held on 7 and 8 August: ten neighbourhoods bring out ten large lanterns, each over 5 metres tall, and ten big drums. Each lantern bears the word Osho, the king in shogi, on its front and a warrior picture on its back. On the second night, all are set alight at once on a bridge over the Yoneshiro River in the Nemuri-nagashi.

Dainichido Bugaku, dedicated on 2 January at Ohirumemuchi Shrine, has been handed down by four districts: Osato, Azukizawa, Taninai and Nagamine. Azukizawa takes Gongenmai and Dengakumai, Osato Komamai, Torimai and Koshomai, Nagamine Uhenmai, and Taninai Godaisonmai.

03 / Oyu Stone Circles

The Manza and Nonakado stone circlesproved by excavation to be groups of kumiishi tombs.

Built about 4,000 years ago, in the early to middle part of the Late Jomon period, the circles are 54.25 metres (Manza) and 44.00 metres (Nonakado) across at their widest. Kumiishi, clusters of several to a dozen or so stones, form a double ring, with timber-post buildings and storage pits spreading around them in concentric circles.

The city lies in the far north-east of Akita, bordering Aomori Prefecture to the north and Iwate Prefecture to the east. It stretches 20.1 km east to west and 52.3 km north to south, and National Route 282, the Tōhoku Expressway and the JR Hanawa Line run along the Yoneshiro River. There are eight Hanawa Line stations in the city. In 1972 the towns of Hanawa, Towada and Osarizawa and the village of Hachimantai merged to form the present city.
