In March 1985 the Ministry of the Environment chose Yuya no Shimizu as one of Japan's 100 Famous Waters. Kobo Daishi is said to have brought forth the water by his powers, and the town records that for about 100 years from the Muromachi period it thrived as a hot-spring bathhouse run directly by Tsurugaoka Hachimangu. Today it serves farming and daily use, and is not suited to drinking.
