01 / The Votive Renga of Imai Gion

Renga verse has been offered as a Gionrite since the Muromachi period.

At the Gion festival of the Susa shrine (今井津須佐神社), renga linked verse has been offered since 1530 (Kyoroku 3). The city writes that Imai Gion is the only festival in Japan to keep up the tradition since the Muromachi period. In 2026 the float is under repair and its procession was cancelled; the on-float renga was scheduled for August 1.

02 / Fukubaru Chojabaru Government Office Site

An office site in Yukuhashi shows a designshared with Fujiwara Palace.

Found in excavations for the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway, this site of a government office dates from the late 7th to the first half of the 8th century and is a National Historic Site. Its grounds approach the scale of the Dazaifu government office site, and a design shared with Fujiwara Palace is seen. It is slightly older than the Buzen provincial office site in Miyako, so the provincial office is thought to have moved.

03 / The Gilt-Bronze Helmet of Inado Tumulus No. 21

From a coastal-terrace tumulus came a helmetcrowned with gleaming gold ornaments.

The Inado tumulus cluster has about 30 mounds, built over about 1 km north to south on a coastal terrace 5 to 10 m above sea level facing Suo-nada Sea. The gilt-bronze helmet with upright ornaments and a visor (金銅立飾付眉庇付冑) from Tumulus No. 21 has gold ornaments on its crown that seem to have Korean Peninsula roots; it is a National Important Cultural Property.

Living here

Three rivers, the Imagawa, the Nagao and the Haraigawa, flow into Suo-nada Sea.

  • about 70,000 people

Yukuhashi lies in eastern Fukuoka Prefecture, and almost all of the city is flat, with the Imagawa (今川), Nagao (長峡川) and Haraigawa (祓川) rivers flowing through. Paddy fields spread across the southwest, where suburban farming is practised, and fishing is active along Suo-nada Sea. The Higashi-Kyushu Expressway and the National Route 201 bypass run through, and the city calls itself the core city of the Keichiku area.

Yukuhashi City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Yukuhashi Red Brick Hall (行橋赤レンガ館) is the former Yukuhashi branch of the 130 Bank, completed in 1914 (Taisho 3) and a Prefectural Important Cultural Property. It looks two-storey outside; inside is a high-ceilinged atrium ringed by a gallery on the second floor.
  2. 02It is a town on a plain where the Imagawa, Nagao and Haraigawa rivers empty into Suo-nada Sea. The city explains that the single centre and eight petals of its flower, the cosmos, stand for the merger of one town and eight villages.
  3. 03On Hotogi-yama, at the border with Miyako, stands Goshogatani Kogoishi (御所ヶ谷神籠石), a National Historic Site. Four groups in the city pass down Buzen Kagura, and at Minoshima Shrine a Momote-sai archery rite, with targets shaped like pirates' eyes, has been held on May 21 in past years.
