Oe, in Setaka, keeps42 scripts of the dance.

A medieval performing art that flourished in the Muromachi period, its lineage is passed down in Oe. It is said that in the 10th year of Tensho (1582), someone of a Kyoto lineage came down to Chikugo and taught it. On January 20, on the stage of the Tenman shrine, the taifu (lead), shite and waki share the chanting among the three of them, with a small hand drum accompanying.

02 / Zoyama Kogoishi

From the lookout of the park on the mountain ringed by stone rows,the Chikugo Plain lies in full view.

Considered an ancient mountain fortress built around the mid-7th century. Of its estimated 2.9 km total length, a horseshoe of stone rows runs about 1.5 km. The valleys on the west slope originally held four water gates, and those of Kayumochi-dani and Nagatani remain as they were. From the park's lookout, the Chikugo Plain and the Ariake Sea can be seen in one sweep.

03 / Senko hanabi

Takei's fireworks-making is said to have begunwith Tachibana Muneshige's offering.

Fireworks-making in Takei is said to have begun in 1592, when Tachibana Muneshige, back from the Korean campaign, offered fireworks at Takei Hachimangu shrine. Senko hanabi (sparklers) come in two kinds, the straw-made subete botan and the paper-made nagate botan; the city records that only the preservation society makes subete botan in Japan. It was designated a prefectural folk technique in March 2026.

The city was born on January 29, 2007 (Heisei 19), when Setaka, Yamakawa and Takata merged. Taking public comments into account, it chose the cherry blossom as its flower and the camphor (kusu) as its tree (established January 13, 2010). Its specialty products include mandarin oranges, strawberries, eggplants, celery, Ariake nori and sake.

  1. 01The Camphor Forest of Shinfunagoya (新舟小屋のクスノキ林) is a grove of camphor trees on the levee along the left bank of the Yabe River, a national natural monument. They were planted on a levee built in the Tachibana domain era (around 1695), and those over 1 m in trunk diameter number more than 150.
  2. 02The nationally designated Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property Kowakamai is, in the city's words, a dance handed down only in Miyama, unique in Japan. The Ishigamiyama Tumulus, a national historic site, holds an armored stone figure that is a national Important Cultural Property; there are also the Kiyomizudera main hall garden (a national place of scenic beauty), its prefecturally designated three-storied pagoda, the prefectural intangible folk cultural properties Donkyankyan and Shinkai Noh, and the prefectural tangible folk cultural property of the giant figures and lanterns of Kamijo Yasaka Shrine.
