01 / Kanmuri Sites (冠遺跡群)

Layers of stone tools, made from Mount Kanmuri'sandesite, are stacked in the plateau's ground.

On the Kanmuri plateau in Yoshiwa, flaked stone tools were made from Mount Kanmuri's volcanic rock for about 30,000 years, from the Late Paleolithic into the Yayoi period. The sites spread about 1 km east-west and 2 km north-south. In the 2024 second survey, stone tools from a lower layer were dated to 42,300 years ago.

02 / Miyajima's Tanomo-san

Boats carrying thanks for the harvestgo out to sea on the night of the 1st of the eighth lunar month.

Households on Miyajima gather handmade tanomo boats at Momijidani Park, have them purified by a Shinto priest, and float them toward the Inari shrine across the strait, loaded with dolls, one for each family member. In 2009 the custom was selected by the national government as an intangible folk cultural property requiring documentation.

03 / Momijidani River Garden Sabo Facilities

The Momijidani River sabo (erosion-control) works were begun in 1948 and completed in 1950. Stones from the site were carried without heavy machinery and laid unworked, under a policy of using gardeners. The garden section now measures 688 m, and five check dams survive.

The city stretches north to south, from Miyajima on the Seto Inland Sea to the western Chugoku mountains over 1,000 m high. Yoshiwa is designated a heavy-snow area. Kendama production in the city stopped in 1998 and resumed in 2001. The old Tsuwano Kaido road, about 77 km, runs to Tsuwano.

  1. 01Toun-ji (洞雲寺) is a Zen temple opened in 1487 (Chokyo 1) by Fujiwara Norichika, chief priest of Itsukushima Shrine and lord of Sakurao Castle. Within its grounds, the grave of Sue Harukata, who lost the Battle of Itsukushima, stands as a hokyointo pagoda alongside those of Tomoda Okifuji and Hoida Motokiyo and his wife.
  2. 02On Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine, the sea before it, and the Misen primeval forest behind it are components of the World Heritage site, and the whole island is a Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty. Tanomo-san and the Momijidani River sabo works are also found on the island.
  3. 03Yoshiwa has the Kanmuri Sites and the Oshigatao fault zone, a national Natural Monument. In Hara, the Chorakuza troupe carries on Sekkyo Genjibushi, a prefectural intangible folk cultural property. Nichigetsu Ball, the kendama with a cup, began to be made in Hatsukaichi.
