01 / Kunosaka Pass

Said to be named for a goddess who threwher weaving tool into a pond.

The goddess Ichikishimahime (市杵嶋姫命), moving from Tsukushi to Aki with a small child on her back, is said to have run out of breath here and thrown her weaving tool, the "chikiri", into a pond at the foot. The shrine built over the pond, Chikiriike Shrine (榺池神社), is said to stand there. Yoshida Shōin also crossed this pass in 1859.

Yellowtail farming began on Atata Island (阿多田島) in the 1965–74 period. After four years of research from fiscal 2013, the island developed "Atata Hamachi to Lemon" (あたたハマチtoレモン), yellowtail raised on lemons. Limonene from the citrus is said to slow oxidation and keep the flesh color. Shipping is winter only, and the fish are sold at the Otake Fisheries GOGO Market held around November to February.
