01 / Toyomatsu's Faith Implements

Prayer tools used in the old village of Toyomatsu,down to the tools of its confraternities, are nationally designated.

This collection gathers implements used for worship in the former village of Toyomatsu, well stocked in both quality and quantity and neatly classified. In 1968, 881 items were designated a national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property. It covers ritual, prayer, kagura, lamp, banquet and rice-planting implements, and tools of the village's kō confraternities are also plentiful.

02 / Jingi Rite and the Yuki Hachiman Grove

Jingi is a rite offered by each district at the autumn festival of Kametsuruyama Hachiman Shrine. Processing under great banners, the big-drum players in feather headdresses (shaguma) dance like fighting cocks. The shrine grove is a prefectural natural monument, with about 750 trees over 1m in trunk girth.

03 / Obata Magistrate's Office Site

The Nakatsu domain's magistrate's officefor Bingo was placed at Obata.

From 1717 to the end of the shogunate, Jinseki County was governed split between shogunate land and the Buzen-Nakatsu domain (now Nakatsu, Oita). Nakatsu held 22 of the county's 37 villages and placed its Bingo magistrate's office in Obata. The site lies within the town hall grounds and is a town historic site.

  1. 01Toyoman-go of Jinsekikogen was a Jinseki ox that pulled the hearse (the carriage bearing the coffin) at the state funeral of Emperor Taisho on February 7, 1927. At Hiroshima Prefecture's request it was received free of charge from the Imperial Household Ministry (Onshi-gyu), produced many sire bulls, and its bloodline is carried on in today's Jinseki beef.
  2. 02The Toyomatsu faith implements are a national Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property, and the Jingi rite is offered at Kametsuruyama Hachiman Shrine in Yuki. In Obata lies the site of the magistrate's office of the Buzen-Nakatsu domain. The town also has the Doumen and Kannondo cave sites of the Taishakukyo site group, the prefectural historic Tatsunokuchi Kofun, the prefecturally protected Kyosaiji camellia, and the Utano Shimizu spring, where Saigyo is said to have left a poem.
  3. 03The town lies on a plateau in eastern Hiroshima, at 400 to 500m. It has no railway station, and Chugoku Bus runs from Fukuyama Station to Michi-no-Eki Sanwa 182 Station.
