01 / Hand-woven Nakatsugi-omote
Joining two rushes in the middlelet even short rushes become tatami facing.
Traditional tatami facing (hikidōshi-omote, 引通表) was woven from one long rush. Nakatsugi-omote (手織中継表) runs two rushes in from both edges and joins them in the middle, using only the evenly thick central part. Hasegawa Shin'emon of Sanna village on the Numakuma Peninsula devised it around the Keichō era.
