The Hokkaido Central Longitude-LatitudeMarker became a symbol of the "center (navel)."

A concrete base in the Furano Elementary School grounds was set in 1914 as a gravity-measurement point. It went missing in 1934 and was found again in 1955. The next year it was named the Hokkaido Central Longitude-Latitude Observation Marker, and in 1971 it became a city-designated cultural property.

The city overview says the leading theory is that the name changed from the Ainu word "Furanui" (a place with a smell). Because the Furano River rises on Mount Tokachi and carries a sulfur smell, it is thought to have been named so.
