Shirahata Castle ruins01 ／ Castle
During the wars of the Northern and Southern Courts, the town says, Akamatsu Enshin held Shirahata castle (白旗城) with only 2,000 men against 60,000 under Nitta Yoshisada, for 50 days. The site is a national historic site, and the town now promotes it to students facing exams: a castle that does not fall.
02 ／ A life
Otori Keisuke (大鳥圭介) was born in 1832 in Iwaki, now part of Kamigori, the eldest son of a physician. He fought for the old shogunate, lost at Goryokaku and was jailed; under the Meiji government he went on to head the Imperial College of Engineering and the Peers' School, and served as minister to Qing China.

The Chikusa river crosses the town from north to south, and the whole town is designated a "village of water". Most of its land is hills and mountains of 300 to 400 metres. The local crop is molokhia, sold as noodles, powder and sweets.

Kamigori Station is where the JR Sanyo Main Line and the Chizu Express line divide; the limited express Super Hakuto stops here. The town covers 150.26 square kilometres, 14.3 km east to west and 10.5 km north to south.
