Birthplace of usukuchi soy01 ／ Soy sauce
The city calls Tatsuno the birthplace of usukuchi (淡口), the pale soy sauce. Wheat from the Harima plain, good soybeans, salt from Ako and the iron-poor water of the Ibo river came together here, under the protection of the Wakisaka domain. A Western-style building from 1932 is now the soy sauce museum.
02 ／ Streets
The castle town of the Tatsuno domain, rated at 53,000 koku. Buildings from the Edo period through the prewar Showa years still stand, and in December 2019 the quarter was designated an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. People call it the Little Kyoto of Harima. It is a 15-minute walk west of Hon-Tatsuno Station.
03 ／ Songs
Miki Rofu (三木露風), who wrote the words to Akatombo (赤とんぼ, "Red Dragonfly"), was born here in 1889. In October 1984 the city declared itself the home of children's songs and set up a foundation that still runs a song festival. His birth house stands below the slope of Tatsuno Castle.
Living here
Hand-stretched somen noodles and leather are local industries too; the city says its leather output is among the highest in Japan. The Kishin Line has five stations inside the city, and the Sanyo Expressway has a Tatsuno interchange.
