In 606 Empress Suiko gave Prince Shotoku 100 cho of paddy in Harima, and he passed it to Horyu-ji in Nara. Ikaruga-dera (斑鳩寺), built on that land, burned down in 1541; the lecture hall, the three-storey pagoda and the Shotoku hall were rebuilt. The grounds are free to enter.

Ikaruga-no-sho (鵤荘), the Horyu-ji estate, lasted about a thousand years, until Hashiba Hideyoshi took Harima in 1580. Stones said to mark its edges stand at five places in the town and one in Himeji; four of them are prefectural historic sites. People call them the stones the prince threw.
