Komatsu's Otabi Matsuri (お旅まつり) is the spring festival of Ubashi Shrine (莵橋神社) and Motoori-Hiyoshi Shrine (本折日吉神社). Its floats (hikiyama) were built in 1766, modeled on those of Nagahama. The 8 surviving floats are a Komatsu-designated property, and the float festival is an Ishikawa Prefecture-designated intangible folk property. Two of the eight districts perform children's kabuki each year, in what is called one of Japan's three great children's kabuki traditions.

In 1639 the shogunate allowed Maeda Toshitsune (前田利常), third lord of the Kaga domain, to make Komatsu Castle his retirement residence; he entered it the following year. Surrounded by the Kaji River in marshland, it was called Komatsu Ukishiro (小松浮城), the "floating castle." Toshitsune also built Komatsu Tenmangu (小松天満宮) to guard the castle. He lived there until his death in 1658; today only the stone base of the main tower remains.

Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine (安宅住吉神社) traces its founding to 782 and moved to its present site in 1647. Its grounds recall the legend of Yoshitsune, fleeing his brother Yoritomo and shielded by the warrior-monk Benkei, while the barrier guard Togashi let them pass, knowing who they were. The shrine calls itself Japan's only guardian deity for overcoming life's hardships, and it draws worshippers from across the country.

  • Moved to its present site in 1647
  • Called Japan's only guardian deity for overcoming hardship (city)

  2. 02At the Otabi Matsuri (お旅まつり), the spring festival of Ubashi and Motoori-Hiyoshi shrines, two of eight districts take turns performing children's kabuki on decorated floats each year. Kaga lord Maeda Toshitsune made Komatsu Castle his retirement seat; ringed by marsh, it was called Komatsu Ukishiro (小松浮城), the "floating castle."
  3. 03In Ataka, Ataka Sumiyoshi Shrine (安宅住吉神社) keeps the legend of Yoshitsune and Benkei, and calls itself Japan's only guardian deity for overcoming hardship. Hanasaka stone (花坂陶石), said to have been found in the late Edo period, is still quarried in Hanasaka for Kutani-ware clay.
