The main hall of Motoyama-ji (本山寺) was rebuilt in 1300 (Shōan 2) and designated a National Treasure in 1955. Its Niō Gate mixes wayō, karayō, and tenjikuyō styles in a rare blend, and is a National Important Cultural Property. The five-story pagoda, completed in 1910, stands at only four of the 88 Shikoku pilgrimage temples: Motoyama-ji, Zentsū-ji, Shido-ji, and Chikurin-ji.

Atop Mt. Shiude (紫雲出山, 352m), a hilltop settlement was built in the mid-to-late Yayoi period. Overlooking the Bisan Seto and Hiuchi-nada straits, it is thought to have stood at a strategic point on Seto Inland Sea trade routes. Pottery found during footpath construction in 1949 brought the site to light; it became a prefectural historic site in 1984, then a National Historic Site in 2019.

At the foot of a hill in Yoshizu, Mino-cho, 24 ancient kiln ruins have been found. The roof-end tiles bear a double-lotus, eight-petal pattern identical to those used at Fujiwara Palace (藤原宮), the first roof-tiled imperial palace, built in 694 under Empress Jitō. The remains came to light during farm-road construction in 1991 and became a National Historic Site in 1996.

Living here

Seven old Mitoyo towns merged in 2006.

  • about 60,000 people

In 2006, the seven towns of Takase, Yamamoto, Mino, Toyonaka, Nio, Takuma, and Saida merged to form Mitoyo City. The Sanuki Mountains form its southern border with Tokushima Prefecture, while the Shonai Peninsula and islands such as Awashima and Shishijima lie to the northwest. The JR Yosan Line runs through the city, and its gateway station, close to the main city hall, is Takase Station. No shinkansen or limited express trains stop here.

Mitoyo City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01At Chichibugahama beach in Nio-cho, the sand mirrors the sky only in the brief window when low tide and the evening calm coincide.
  2. 02The main hall of Motoyama-ji, rebuilt in 1300, is a National Treasure; atop Mt. Shiude lies a Yayoi-period hilltop settlement, a National Historic Site since 2019.
  3. 03The Muneyoshi Kiln Ruins in Mino-cho, a National Historic Site, once fired tiles matching those of Fujiwara Palace. The great camphor tree of Shishijima, the cliff-carved Buddha of Iyadani-ji, and Awashima's former mariners' school are also in this city.

If something caught your eye, ask the town itself.
