On May 23, 1889, the Sanuki Railway opened a 16.4 km line from Marugame to Kotohira, starting from Tadotsu — said to mark the beginning of railways in Shikoku. JR Shikoku marked the 100th anniversary by preserving an 8620-class steam locomotive's driving wheel by the station, and the locomotive itself north of the station building. The Dosan Line's zero-kilometre post still stands at Tadotsu Station.

02 / Sanagishima's dual graves

On Sanagishima's Nagasaki beach,round-stone graves remain.

In the Nagasaki (長崎) hamlet on Sanagishima (佐柳島), round beach stones piled into burial graves called sakibaka or maebaka still stand apart from hillside memorial graves called honbaka — remnants of a dual-grave custom found across the Shiwaku Islands. Nagasaki's graves are a Kagawa Prefecture Tangible Folk Cultural Property.

Takamijima (高見島), with little flat land, has houses stacked in terraces up its steep slopes behind dry stone walls. Most date from the Edo period and are said to show the skill of the Shiwaku carpenters (塩飽大工), shipwrights from the Shiwaku Islands. In recent years the island has also hosted works from the Setouchi Triennale art festival.

Living here

The Yosan and Dosan lines part ways at Tadotsu.

  • about 20,000 people
  • Rural district town

Facing the Seto Inland Sea in western Kagawa, the town sits where the JR Yosan and Dosan lines diverge at Tadotsu Station — no shinkansen stops here. Tadotsu, in Nakatado District (仲多度郡), has never merged with a neighbouring municipality. The gateway is Tadotsu Station.

  1. 01A port once busy with kitamae-bune (北前船) trading ships, Tadotsu was added in 2019 to the Japan Heritage story "Kitamae-bune Ports and Shipowners' Villages"; merchant mansions such as the former Goda residence (合田家住宅) still stand.
  2. 02In 1889 the Sanuki Railway opened from Tadotsu, said to mark the start of railways in Shikoku; the Dosan Line's zero-kilometre post still stands at Tadotsu Station.
  3. 03Offshore, Sanagishima keeps a dual-grave custom of separate burial and memorial graves, and Takamijima keeps its stone-walled houses.
