In 1156, Retired Emperor Sutoku was exiled to Sanuki after the Hōgen Rebellion (保元の乱), and died in 1164 at age 46. His remains were cremated at Shiromine, which became his mausoleum. The Imperial Household Agency manages Shiramine no Misasagi, a square-mound tomb, and it is said to be the only imperial mausoleum in Shikoku. The neighboring Shiromine-ji (白峯寺) is temple No. 81 of the Shikoku pilgrimage.
