The round uchiwa (うちわ) fan is said to have begun in the early Edo period as a souvenir for pilgrims visiting Kotohira, sold with a red seal stamped in gold. The Marugame domain encouraged lower-ranking samurai to make them as a side trade, and it grew into a local industry. Bamboo comes from Iyo, paper from Tosa and paste from Awa, all nearby. Marugame now makes about 83 million fans a year, some 90% of Japan's uchiwa, and was designated a National Traditional Craft in 1997.

03 / Ikkanbari

A technique said to trace to Kobo Daishi, kept alive today by one craftsman.

Ikkanbari (一貫張) is said to have begun some 1,200 years ago, when the monk Kobo Daishi brought back the technique of coating persimmon tannin over paper. Japanese paper is layered some 60 times over a woven bamboo frame, then coated with persimmon tannin and dried in the shade over and over. Today, Hiroki Nishitani, who bears the name Manmanan Ikkansai VI (六代目万満庵一貫斎), is the only person still making it by hand in the traditional way.
