Even the small round tombs that make up most of the cluster can have a ditch around them. At Tomb 19, a ditch with an outer diameter of about 20m was found. Red pigment was also detected near the cups and bowls from its southwest floor, and they may have been offerings or ritual objects.

  • Tomb 19 ditch: outer diameter about 20m
  • 7 stem cups and 5 bowls unearthed
  • Red pigment also detected

Lupin, the town flower, was grown along the coast as green manure until around 1965. Pine planting and chemical fertilizer made it vanish for a time, but efforts led by the town's chamber of commerce brought it back, and it blooms in April. Black pine woods continue behind the shore.

  • Grown as green manure until around 1965
  • Japanese name Noborifuji; blooms in April
  • Pine woods: windbreak, tide and sand-drift protection

03 / Sand dune of Tomb 1

The base of Tomb 1's mound seemsto be carved out of a sand dune.

The tomb cluster stands on the Otsuka sandbar, an old dune belt formed before the late Jomon period. A survey the town reported in 2024 found the lower mound was cut from sand layers, and the tomb is thought to have looked two-toned when built. Layers of volcanic ash, murasaki-kora and ao-kora (the latter from Mount Kaimon), lie on the sandbar.

  • Otsuka sandbar formed 5,700 to 5,500 years ago
  • Murasaki-kora: ash from 874
  • Ao-kora: ash from the late 7th century
