01 / Kawagokeso and Usukawagoromo of the Anraku River

In the Anraku River, two species ofthe Podostemaceae grow mixed together.

The Podostemaceae are seed plants that grow in fast-flowing water and look like moss. The Agency for Cultural Affairs designated the Anraku River as a rare area where two species grow mixed together, and the Mae River as a good growing environment. The Anraku River has both Kawagokeso and Usukawagoromo; the Mae River has Usukawagoromo.

02 / Great Camphor of Shibushi

The camphor at the shrine entrancehas a large hollow inside its trunk.

This camphor tree stands to the right of the entrance in the grounds of Yamamiya Shrine in Anraku. The city says the inside of its base is a large hollow, with an entrance opening on the north side. The prefectural museum records 24 species of epiphytes, such as Japanese wax tree and Japanese privet. It is 22 m tall and became a national Natural Monument in 1941.

03 / Dago Festival at Tanoura Yamamiya Shrine

A prefecturally designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property; the city says it is held on the first Sunday of February. Each hamlet decorates green bamboo with red and white rice cakes (dago) like flowers and offers it, and after the ritual people scramble for them. Eating dago is said to bring a year of good health, and they are eaten raw or in sweet bean soup.

Shibushi lies on the Osumi Peninsula in eastern Kagoshima, bordering Miyakonojo and Kushima in Miyazaki. It was formed in 2006 by the merger of Shibushi, Matsuyama and Ariake. The gateway is Shibushi Station on the JR Nichinan Line; there is no Shinkansen station.
