01 / Misaki-maki Through the Years

The domain ranches turned state-owned;in 1874 Misaki-maki was sold to a union.

In 1697 (Genroku 10), Akizuki Tanemasa of the Takanabe domain set up seven domain-run ranches, starting with Toimisaki-maki, plus 80 village-run ones. By 1700 Kushima's horses reached 6,223. Misaki-maki covers about 560 hectares.

02 / Former Yoshimatsu Residence

A modern Japanese-style house raised in 1919has a Western room under a coffered ceiling.

The Yoshimatsu family served as village heads in the Edo period and prospered in forestry after Meiji. The main house uses fine timber for its coffered-ceiling entrance, its Western-style reception room with an orikami coffered ceiling (折上格天井), its staircase and its Buddhist-altar room.

03 / Stone Fudo Myoo at Eitoku-ji

Pour water on the relief in the rock,and the figure of Fudo Myoo appears.

In the grounds of Eitoku-ji (永徳寺) in Hagase, Kitakata, a Fudo Myoo (不動明王) about 120cm high is carved in relief in the rock face. Swordsmith Sanjo Kokaji Munechika is said to have settled in Hagase and carved it as a likeness of himself with a sword tip. The standing stone beside it is said to stand for his wife.

  1. 01Koshima is an island of about 3.5km in circumference off Ishinami Beach in Ichiki, and a national natural monument, the Koshima Monkey Habitat. Mito Satsue served as a local teacher, and discovered the monkeys' sweet-potato washing (イモ洗い) and wrote to researchers about it.
  2. 02The Misaki horses of Cape Toi began with a ranch set up by the Takanabe domain, and were designated a national natural monument in 1953. In Toi, the Toimisaki Himatsuri (都井岬火まつり) recreates the legend of the priest Eitokubo (衛徳坊) driving out a serpent with fire; its 60th edition was held in August 2026.
  3. 03The Former Yoshimatsu Residence is an Important Cultural Property with a Western-style reception room. Toimisaki Lighthouse first shone in 1929 and became a Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2019.
