01 / Yoron Jugoya Dance

A banner falling during the dance is a bad omen. The order of the farces cannot be changed.

It is offered on the 15th day of the 3rd, 8th and 10th months of the old calendar, in front of Tokonushi Shrine. The big banner at the head, inscribed with a prayer for peace across the island, must not fall: that is the worst omen, and its bearer has been required to undergo purification. The farces always begin in a fixed order of three pieces.

Yago is a well that uses the water flowing through a limestone cave beside the community hall of Gusuku district, and a town Natural Monument. A stone channel carries water from deep inside, running over ten meters. It was the district's water supply until waterworks came in the Showa era.

About 1.5 km off the island's east coast lies Yurigahama. Because it appears only for limited hours as the tide rises and falls, the tourism association calls it a phantom beach. Forecasts of its appearance are published on the association's calendar.
