Tōyama Yajibei, the village headman (惣庄屋), served as overall supervisor of this reservoir, built in the Ansei era. The project was run independently by the tenaga (手永), a unit of regional administration, and records also note that a briefing told villagers they would not be asked for funds or unpaid labor. Every April 4, a festival is held at Tōyama Shrine, with his descendants invited. It was designated a World Heritage Irrigation Structure in 2025.

The city's plan records that on the Buzen Kaido, the Higo domain's sankin-kotai route, crossing the Kikuchi River into Yamaga brought you to a gate (惣門, Somon) that kept watch on suspicious comings and goings. The present gate was rebuilt in 2024 at local request, after the one the city restored about 20 years ago was taken down as it decayed.

A gourd-holding charm, from a legendof a puppy that followed the deity.

The annual festival of Yasaka Shrine (within Ōmiya Shrine) falls on June 15. A rice-flour charm shaped like a puppy holding a gourd (ひょうたん) is given out to pray for a year of good health. It comes from a legend that, as the deity was moved from Kyoto, a puppy followed, revived on gourd-flask sake, and the party reached Yamaga.

Yamaga City isthis kind of town.

  1. 01The Aira-tobikazura (アイラトビカズラ) of Sagara in Kikuka is a Special Natural Monument. The city's list says it is found "only here in Japan," and that its name is said to come from the main image leaping onto the vine when the Kannon hall burned. It blooms every May.
  2. 02Yachiyoza, a theater built in 1910 along the Buzen Kaido, is an Important Cultural Property. Yamaga lanterns, made only of paper and paste, are dedicated at Ōmiya Shrine and designated by the city as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
  3. 03At Chibusan Kofun, part of a national historic site, patterns and figures are painted in red, white and black on a stone house-shaped structure (石屋形) in the chamber. Tomb 27 at Nabeta Yokoana has weapons carved in relief on its outer wall.

If something caught your eye, ask the town itself.
