01 / Kikuchi Matsubayashi
The Noh stage faces a giant muku treecalled Shogunboku.
On the first day of Kikuchi Shrine's autumn festival, matsubayashi (松囃子) is performed on a Noh stage that faces a great muku tree called Shogunboku (将軍木), a prefectural natural monument. Local tradition holds that it began as a New Year celebration in the 14th century, held by Kikuchi Takemitsu after he welcomed Prince Kanenaga (懐良親王). In 1998 it was designated a national Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property.
