Yunomae Station's main building (湯前駅本屋) is a single-story wooden structure built in 1924 (Taisho 13) for the Yunomae Line, and it became a nationally registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2014. The town's plan notes that parts of the pillars reuse earlier rails, whose size can be compared with today's. The national database describes it as the only station building on the line that keeps its prewar appearance.

  • Built 1924 (Taisho 13)
  • Registered national Tangible Cultural Property, 2014
  • Pillars reuse earlier rails

02 / Higashikata Village and the Tunnel

A new-field village founded after the canal'scompletion was split in three after about 80 years.

When the Kounomizo Canal (幸野溝) was completed in 1705, the new-field village of Higashikata (東方村) arose, covering parts of what are now Taragi Town and Mizukami Village; in 1789 it was divided by domain order among the three villages of Kume, Taragi and Yunomae. Within Yunomae lies a 665m tunnel, the 'new' tunnel (新貫), which the town's plan says was dug anew with 45 survey engineers brought from Satsuma.

  • Canal completed 1705
  • Higashikata Village: about 80 years (to 1789)
  • 'New' tunnel: 665m long

03 / Stone Pagodas and a Miswritten Name

A temple known by a miswritten namehas stone pagodas inscribed Kanki 2.

The Amida Hall (阿弥陀堂) in Myodoji's detached grounds originally bore another temple name (浄心寺). The town's tourism site says the name was miswritten when its Buddhist statues were designated national treasures in 1915 (Taisho 4), and it came to be called by a different one (城泉寺). The seven-story and nine-story stone pagodas are national Important Cultural Properties, both with a 'Kanki 2' (1230) inscription.

  • Kanki 2 (1230) inscription
  • Seven- and nine-story pagodas: national Important Cultural Properties
  • 1915 designation: name miswritten (城泉寺)

  1. 01Myodoji Main Hall (明導寺本堂) is a temple hall completed in 1926 (Taisho 15) and registered as a national Tangible Cultural Property. Its mansard roof and pointed-arch windows give it a Western style, and the national description says it is said to have been designed independently by the abbot's eldest son, who studied at Ryukoku University in Kyoto.
  2. 02The main building of Yunomae Station (湯前駅本屋), a wooden station building of 1924 (Taisho 13), has pillars that use earlier rails. Higashikata Village (東方村), founded after the Kounomizo Canal (幸野溝) was completed, was split into three villages after about 80 years, and Yunomae holds the 665m 'new' tunnel (新貫).
  3. 03In the grounds of the Myodoji Amida Hall (明導寺阿弥陀堂), known by another name (城泉寺), stand seven-story and nine-story stone pagodas with a Kanki 2 (1230) inscription. The Hasshoji Amida Hall (八勝寺阿弥陀堂) is an Important Cultural Property thought to date back to the late 15th century, and the satirical cartoonist Nasu Ryosuke grew up near Shimomachi Bridge (下町橋), a stone bridge built in 1906 (Meiji 39).
