The official page of the NPO Oketo Poppo Painting Gallery says the town was inspired by a letter to the Yomiuri Shimbun, "A place for unknown painters' works to be donated," and made the second floor of the old station building, on a line that closed in 2006, a place to show donated works. The town says the old station became Community Hall Poppo.

The tourism site says Okecraft's birth was triggered by a woodworking book in the library. In the Forest Craft Center's chronology, an industrial designer first visited in February 1983 and gave a lecture, and Okecraft was born in October of the same year.
