01 / Bridge
A bridge crossing an irrigation canal at a slanthas its lower blocks laid with a twist.

The Hokusei Line bridge (about 9.1 m long) crosses the Roppano-isui canal, built in the Edo period, at a slant. The blocks in the lower part of the arch are therefore laid with a twist, a construction called nejiri-manpo. Together with the three-arch Megane Bridge, it was selected in fiscal 2009 as a Civil Engineering Heritage site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers.
