01 / Harayama Dolmens

A tomb form with Korean Peninsula influence;its grave goods are all Jomon pottery.

A communal cemetery from the end of the Jomon period. A dolmen (支石墓) is a tomb whose stone chamber or pit is covered with supporting stones and a huge capstone, a form originally typical of the Korean Peninsula. The Agency for Cultural Affairs says about half have pottery under the capstone, all of it late Jomon. No Yayoi pottery was found at all.

02 / Christian Gravestones

A 1613 gravestone spells "Ru-i-su" (る井寸) in kana,judged suitable to read as "Luis."

Three gravestones in the Suzaki cemetery in Kazusa are prefectural historic sites. One, half-cylindrical, is carved in vertical lines: "Keicho 18, month illegible, age 29, Ru-i-su (る井寸)." The city board of education takes it to be a male baptismal name. The Kirishitan gravestone at Sugawa in Nishiarie (a national historic site) bears a death year of 1610 in Roman letters.

03 / Kuchinotsu Port

A customs office opened at a coal-export port;its 1899 Western-style building remains.

Kuchinotsu was permitted in 1878 as an export port for Miike coal, and a customs branch opened. It became a special export port in 1889, and for a time its exports are said to have surpassed Nagasaki's. After Miike Port opened in 1909, ship calls fell. The former office survives as a large wooden Western-style building (prefectural designation).

There is no railway station in the city; the Shimabara Railway closed its Shimabara-Gaiko to Kazusa section in March 2008. The gateway is the Shimatetsu Bus stop Minamishimabara City Hall (南島原市役所前), 43 minutes at best from Shimabara Station. From Kuchinotsu Port, the Shimatetsu Ferry takes about 30 minutes to Oniike Port (鬼池港) in Amakusa.
