01 / Nagayo Sansai

Excavation unearthed failed sansai pieces.Firing them in Nagayo became more likely.

At Tao in Ureri-go (嬉里郷田尾), the remains of a climbing kiln about 115 m long (Nagayo Sarayama Kiln Site) survive. Nagayo ware began at this kiln in Kanbun 7 (1667). Because the sansai's methods and more are unknown, the town calls it the "phantom Nagayo sansai" (幻の長与三彩). Failed pieces unearthed in a Heisei 17 (2005) excavation made firing at the site more likely.

02 / Nakao Castle Ruins

A rampart of tamped earth, piled up six times,is said to be exceptional among Nagasaki's Sengoku castles.

The rampart is 4 m wide at the base, about 1 m at the top, and 2.5 m high. A Heisei 4 (1992) excavation observed six layers of tamped earth, showing it was built up six times. Ramparts at Sengoku castles in the prefecture are said to be mostly flimsy. It is a town-designated site, and the rampart can be seen near the top of Nakao Castle Park (中尾城公園).

Muromachi five-ring towers stand in a housing area;"Meitoku" is seen as Nagayo's oldest inscription.

In a residential area of the Maruta district (丸田郷), six large and small five-ring towers (五輪塔) stand. From the scattered base stones, more than 30 are thought to have existed. The inscribed eras run from Meitoku 2 (1391) to Tenbun 10 (1541), and they are thought to relate to the Nagayo clan, the local lords. It is a prefecturally designated historic site.

Nagayo Town isthis kind of town.

  1. 01Dozaki Site, on Dozaki-no-hana at the town's northern tip jutting into Omura Bay, is the town's oldest and largest. In the Paleolithic, Omura Bay held no seawater and was a large basin
  2. 02The oldest pottery confirmed in town, about 8,000 years old, comes from Maedakawachi Cave. The town names Dozaki Site, Terayashiki Gorinto, Nakao Castle Ruins and Nagayo Sarayama Kiln Site its "four representative sites"
  3. 03At Hamanojo (Tsunomi Castle) Ruins, a tale says soldiers swallowed their saliva at a cry of "umeboshi!" and took the castle, and that is said to give it its name
